Heather Eve Markin, of Edwards, lost her fight with breast cancer Sunday. She was 45 years old. Heather battled for five long years, always knowing she would win and making plans for her future.
Heather was born on Dec. 29, 1966, in Bay Shore, N.Y. Heather graduated from Dowling College in New York. Always an East Coast girl, once she found the Vail Valley in 1994, she knew she had found her new home. With this new home came her close friends that were the core of her life.
Heather's sharp and observant wit was in such contrast with her generosity. She was a thoughtful friend that would put great time and effort scouring the arts and crafts fairs, finding just the right gift and meticulously wrapping it for the perfect presentation. She had a great eye for detail and shopped like she was being paid to do so. Heather was often known to tap into her “inner florist” turning $10 worth of flowers from City Market into a $50 bouquet.
Heather's friends remember many hours of laughter as she was riotously funny. Her no-nonsense personality found a special place in the hearts of those friends. She was the bane of restaurants, testing their “no substitutions” policies and, nine times out of 10, creating a new dish to her liking. Heather was a person who knew what she wanted and made sure she got it. This was one of her many strengths.
Heather and her friends so appreciated her parents, Jess and Carole, as they assumed the duty of helping her fight the battle against her cancer — a heart-wrenching task with few rewards that they performed with quiet grace. It was a gift for Heather to have them by her side. They and her friends want to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Shaw Regional Cancer Center and the Vail Valley Medical Center for the support and care that she received over the years.
There is a hole that will never be filled with Heather gone.
Heather is survived by her parents, Carole and Jess Markin of Brightwaters, N.Y.; Ruth and Les Samuel, her aunt and uncle; and her cousins Denise Ross, Ali and Jon Ross and Ken Hamlet.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Vail Chapel, with a reception to follow at Vista in Arrowhead. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the Vail Valley Charitable Fund, P.O. Box 2307, Edwards, CO 81632.
