So anything happening this weekend?
Here's the rundown with appropriate “classic Freud” commentary. (I'm not praising myself here. That's just a shout out to Battle Mountain alum Mike Harland, Class of 2010.)
• The headliner is regional wrestling Friday and Saturday, down in Gypsum where host Eagle Valley hopes to make some noise. The proceedings start at 2 p.m. and continue right the evening. Saturday, the semifinals are at 9 a.m. Third- through sixth-place matches are at 2 p.m. — the top-four go to state — and the championship matches are at 4 p.m.
Eagle Valley's Andy Armstrong is ranked No. 4 at 220 pounds by On the Mat. He won the Warrior Classic in Grand Junction. Eagle Valley's last state champion was Chris Best. For Battle Mountain, one has to back to Sergio Sanchez in 2000.
And for some nice trivia from our sister paper The Eagle Valley Enterprise: Current Eagle Valley coachRon Beard was a state champ in 1986 with Fruita Monument.
• OK, Battle Mountain hosts Eagle Valley in Round 2 of the basketball rivalry Saturday — ladies at 12:30 p.m.; gents at 2 p.m. Ladies first, of course. The Devils should win, but ... do we all remember that we gathered here one year ago for Round 2 and the Devils girls and the Huskies boys, for that matter, were expected to win? How'd that work out?
Battle Mountain girls basketball's record may be 2-and-a-whole-lot, but the Huskies nearly came back against the Devils in Gypsum last month. Dumb is not to learn from history. The Devils ladies are officially on upset alert.
In the guys' game, Eagle Valley is clearly the favorite — not exactly an insight since the Devils are 16-5 and the Huskies 6-14. The Devils' task, however, is to deal with the emotions of the rivalry, unlike last month, and put the Huskies away early.
Nothing's official until the CHSAA seeding meeting, but it's hard to see Eagle Valley, with a minimum of 16 wins, not making the state playoffs. If you think the collective adrenaline is high for Battle Mountain, what's it going to be like in the postseason, fellas? Might as well get ready now.
Meanwhile, this is Battle Mountain's playoff game, and having beaten Steamboat Springs last weekend, likely has the attitude of “Why not?”
Either way, bring earplugs. With both schools building new gyms recently, the Huskies' home has the stands closer to the floor and it gets really loud.
• Of course, before we get to the main event, the Huskies host Glenwood tonight. Battle Mountain led the Demons at halftime in the first meeting on the road. If you can beat Steamboat ...
• Welcome home, Vail Christian, particularly to the ladies, who have lived a nomadic existence with seven of their last nine on the road. This is get-well time with four home games and a chance to finish up over .500, going into districts.
It's Paonia Saturday, which for the ladies is quite a tall order. Said Eagles are No. 2 in The Denver Post poll. Paonia is at Meeker the night before. Hopefully, that game goes about six overtimes.
The ladies have the Eagles at 2:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 4 p.m. Guys, play defense. I know some parts are missing. I don't care at this point. Know where you are on the floor, plant your feet and get your hands up. That starts the transition, and we know you can run. Get it done.
• Vail Mountain School basketball is home for West Grand today at 4 p.m., and has North Park at 1 p.m. Saturday, also in the friendly confines. You guys owe the latter for a 43-40 loss in January.
• Team I'm rooting for most this weekend? Battle Mountain hockey. The Huskies have had a rough go of it this winter. They're at Dakota Ridge tonight at 8:30. Time to get off the schneid, boys.
