Does the Eagle County landfill offer any free or discounted services to residents?
— Dustin in Vail
Thanks for the great question, Dustin.
The landfill has several different free services available to residents.
The landfill has a punch card system that allows all Eagle County residents to dispose of 1,600 pounds of trash and four automobile tires per calendar year free of charge. The punch card can be used any day the landfill is open. Once you exceed the limits on your card, you pay the regular rates.
To obtain a punch card, stop at the scale house prior to dumping your trash and tell the attendant that you want a free pass card. You must show proof of residency to get a card, so please bring two bills or identification cards that list your physical address. The addresses on both must match. A valid driver's license, passport, power bill, water bill, telephone bill, or vehicle registration that includes your physical address will suffice.
Senior citizens of Eagle County, aged 65 and older, can use the landfill free of charge year round. No punch card is necessary. Just let the scale attendant know that you are a senior and be ready to show your driver's license as age verification.
Christmas trees are accepted free of charge at the landfill until Feb. 17. All trees are chipped and mulched at the landfill, where residents can then pick up the mulch free of charge. Mulch has many gardening, landscaping and erosion control applications around your home. If an employee is available, the landfill will even load your truck or trailer for you.
The Household Hazardous Waste facility is another free service available at the landfill. Residents can discard unwanted paints, stains, batteries, aerosols, pesticides, antifreeze, motor oil and other chemicals at the facility. The facility will accept up to 20 items free of charge, two of which can be five-gallon containers. There is a modest per pound charge for any items accepted over the 20-item limit.
As an additional service to county residents, the HHW has a reuse room where you can find paints, stains, solvents and automotive products in new or almost new condition. These are useful household or automotive products that were dropped off in never used or nearly new condition. These materials go onto the shelves in the reuse room and are free for the taking. Products are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and the selection is completely dependent upon what has been recently dropped off.
Did you know that the HHW recycled over 18,000 pounds of electronics and processed more than 40,000 pounds of latex paint in 2011?
Joseph Walls is hazardous-waste specialist at the Eagle County Household Hazardous Waste facility, located at the landfill in Wolcott. The facility is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Call 970-328-3468 or visit www.eaglecounty.us/recyclingwaste for information.
