EDWARDS — Battle Mountain's show choir opened with a sparkling rendition of the national anthem, but after that it was pretty much all Eagle Valley as the Devils rolled to a 72-47 win.
Battle Mountain was sort of the Ron Paul of the day. Even though the Huskies were way behind, they kept taking their shots.
But there was just too much Eagle Valley everywhere all the time.
Fourteen Devils played and 11 scored.
“Our balanced scoring did it for us in this one,” said Devils coach Brent McConaghy.
Battle Mountain tied it 12-12 in the first quarter, but Eagle Valley went on a 22-2 tear to put it out of reach.
Battle Mountain clawed back to within 10 in the third quarter, but the Devils slammed the door.
“This is the first time in a long time we've beaten Battle Mountain twice in a season.” said senior guard Tim Wells. “This one feels good.”
Not this year. Eagle Valley swept their cross-county rivals, both by lopsided scores.
Eagle Valley's Jeremy Sabo, a senior guard, led all scorers with 24 points, including three dunks.
Sabo threw down one of his dunks on a fast break to make it 32-14 on the way to a 36-20 halftime lead.
Wells scored 10 for the Devils.
Jake Engle scored scored 17 for Battle Mountain and Alex Banegas also scored in double figures.
McConaghy cleared his bench for much of the second half for two reasons.
One, because it's always good to get players some minutes when you can, he said.
Second, it's good to rest some key personnel as they prepare for Friday's showdown with Glenwood Springs which should have league-title implications.
Lady Devils win
EDWARDS — Eagle Valley's Lady Devils blanked Battle Mountain for most of the third quarter and cruised to a 45-37 win.
Eagle Valley trailed 25-20 at the half, a score Eagle Valley coach Sam Bartlett called a “wakeup call.”
“We were playing like we were afraid to lose. In the second half we came out playing to win.”
Jasmine Garvin opened Eagle Valley's run with a power move through the lane for two and before you could say “eight to nothing run,” the Devils were on an 8-0 run and took the lead.
Battle Mountain finally scored with 1:18 left in the third quarter when Marianna Garcia drained an 8-footer. Katia Lopez followed it five seconds later with a steal and a layup.
They traded baskets and finished the third quarter tied 31-31.
Eagle Valley's Madeline Lounsberry hit both ends of a one-and-one to make it 36-31, and Mariel Gutierrez drained two more from the line with three and a half minutes left to break it open, 38-31.
Eagle Valley's press started taking a toll in the third quarter.
Battle Mountain fouled continuously late in the fourth quarter to stop the clock and Eagle Valley's Gutierrez spent some quality time at the free throw line, hitting six free throws down the stretch.
She finished the game with 14 points — eight in that fourth-quarter run — seven steals and six rebounds.
Lauren Thorpe added 10 points and six rebounds for Eagle Valley.
Katia Lopez was a one-woman wrecking machine for Battle Mountain with 16 points, eight rebounds and six steals.
