Vail Daily letter: I like Udall's steps toward wilderness

I am encouraged by Sen. Mark Udall's sensible approach to designating new wilderness on public lands in Eagle, Summit and Pitkin counties. It is important to engage community members in a conversation before an important initiative like the proposed Colorado Outdoor Heritage Act becomes law. But it is also important that he recognize the work that's already done.

Sen. Udall is building on the hard work of conservation groups over the last decade to identify appropriate areas for wilderness designation.

For anyone watching the debate over wilderness here over the last few years, it's obvious that wilderness proponents and Rep. Jared Polis have made significant concessions to mountain-bike groups and snowmobile clubs. I urge Sen. Udall to recognize this work, avoid making further concessions and introduce legislation that protects these natural treasures as soon as possible.

It is vitally important to leave these last best places in tact for future generations.
