What are we reading

Verbatim Booksellers in Vail Village

1. "Riding The Bus With My Sister," by Rachel Simon: A true story; Cool Beth is a spirited woman with mental retardation who spends nearly every day riding the city buses. The drivers, a lively group, are her mentors; her fellow passengers are her community. When Cool Beth asks her sister Rachel to accompany her on the buses for one year, they take a transcendent journey that changes Rachel's life in incredible ways, leads her to accept her sister at long last, and teaches her to slow down and enjoy the ride. This will be made into a movie starring Rosie O'Donnell.

2. "Mountain Ranges of Colorado," by John Fielder: John Fielder's latest coffee-table book celebrates Colorado's unique mountain ranges. Beautiful color photographs and narrative text help the reader get a better sense of the ecology and geology in the state. Even the cover feels like granite. All of Verbatim's copies are autographed.

3. "Old School," by Tobias Wolff: Determined to fit in at his New England prep school, the narrator has learned to mimic the bearing and manners of his adoptive tribe while concealing as much as possible about himself. His final year, however, unravels everything he's achieved, and steers his destiny in directions no one could have predicted. The school's mystique is rooted in literature, and for many boys this becomes an obsession, editing the review and competing for the attention of visiting writers whose fame helps to perpetuate the tradition. Robert Frost, soon to appear at JFK's inauguration, is far less controversial than the next visitor, Ayn Rand. But the final guest is one whose blessing a young writer would do almost anything to gain.

4. "Under the Banner of Heaven," by Jon Krakauer: At the core of this book is an appalling double murder committed by two Mormon Fundamentalist brothers, Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a revelation from God commanding them to kill their blameless victims. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this divinely inspired crime, Krakauer constructs a multilayered, bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, savage violence, polygamy, and unyielding faith. Along the way, he uncovers a shadowy offshoot of America's fastest-growing religion, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and raises provocative questions about the nature of religious belief.

5. "What to Expect when You're Expecting," by Heidi Murkoff: America's best-selling pregnancy book, "What to Expect" incorporates everything that's new in pregnancy, childbirth, and the lifestyles of parents-to-be. It is complete with a preconception plan, information on choosing a practitioner, birthing alternatives, and coping with common and not-so-common pregnancy symptoms.

6. "John Fielder's Best of Colorado," by John Fielder: The celebrated Colorado photographer who has traveled the state for more than 20 years in search of its most beautiful vistas shares his love for Colorado's rugged beauty, as well as his knowledge of Colorado's historical, recreational and cultural richness, in this extraordinary guidebook. Through lively text and spectacular images, Fielder reveals more than 160 of his most treasured Colorado locations to photograph so you can work magic with your own camera. You can enjoy some of the state's prime offerings while you travel, as Fielder profiles his favorite restaurants, hotels, hiking and biking trails, and area attractions.

7. "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time," by Mark Haddon: Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries in the world, their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched and detests the color yellow. His quest to investigate the suspicious death of a neighborhood dog makes for one of the more captivating novels in recent years.

8. "Between a Rock and a Hard Place," by Aron Ralston: One of the most extraordinary survival stories ever told; Aspen local Aron Ralston's searing account of his six days trapped with his arm under a boulder in a remote Utah canyon, and how one inspired act of bravery brought him home.

9. "Me Talk Pretty One Day," by David Sedaris: David Sedaris' biographic collection, "Me Talk Pretty One Day," tells a most unconventional life story. It begins with a North Carolina childhood filled with speech-therapy classes and unwanted guitar lessons taught by a midget. From budding performance artist to "clearly unqualified" writing teacher in Chicago, Sedaris' career leads him to New York and eventually, of all places, France.

10. "Words of Calm," by Helen Exley: This small giftbook is an antidote to the stresses of everyday life. These profound words from the world's greatest thinkers will help you rediscover a deep sense of peace and calm.
