Local adventure racer Mike Kloser helped pace Team Salomon/Eco-Internet to the Eco-Challenge New Zealand title. The USA Network is airing a four-part documentary showing, in graphic detail, just what these people go through.
It's both beautiful and horrible, and it's impossible to take your eyes away.
Eco-Challenge is one of the ultimate tests of the human spirit. This week's broadcast is set against the backdrop of the Southern Alps. Kloser and his crew topped a field of 67 teams from 23 countries. They raced 24 hours a day, for 12 days straight, traversing over 220 miles using only non-motorized forms of transport, including horseback riding, mountaineering, fixed ropes, rafting and mountain biking.
Competitors travelled the vertical equivalent of two Mount Everests, descended 3,000-foot rocky slopes, forded waste-deep rivers so cold they could die within minutes, mountain biked along some of the world's toughest terrain, and navigated mountain ranges at night.
Throw in a little sleep deprivation, malnourishment and physical exhaustion, and you have all the the glory and gore of athletic competition.
