Devils booters move to 3-0

Kim Smith is shooting for another state title in the 800. We will likely be able to use the phrase, "Alvis has left the building," when J.J. goes yard.

But, if you will, make way for the Devils girls soccer team, which has spent the first week of the spring season making the case that these booters will be be a force with which to be reckoned come the playoffs.

The Devils started the season with wins over Moffat County and Aspen and, Friday afternoon at the Eagle County Fairgrounds, they made it a hat trick with a 6-0 thumping of the Vail Mountain School.

"It's always good to get league wins under our belts," Devils coach Daiva Katieb said. "I think that a high-scoring game like this really helps to boost confidence. We got to play girls in some different positions and try some other creative things."

Creativity was not lacking when it came to Eagle Valley's scoring touch. Vanissa Carroll scored once, Samantha Phillips had two, and Brooke Baughfman had the trifecta in the win.

"She was controlling the midfield, simple as that," Katieb said. "She was dominating the whole middle of the field. And she found out on that last goal of the game that she, indeed, has a left foot as well as a right foot."

Yes, indeed. Her third was a blast from 40 yards out along the left sideline and she found nothing but net.

"It feels pretty good. My senior year, I just want to be pretty strong and help the team," she said.

While Eagle Valley moved to 3-0 on the year, VMS fell to 0-1. After the game, VMS coaches Bob Bandoni and Jamie Farquhar were pleased with their team's efforts. With a thin bench and injuries, VMS played the final 60 minutes of the game with just nine players, yet still produced stretches of solid play and a few scoring opportunities.

"When you're in a situation like that, you're really relying on character more than anything else," Bandoni said. "Player for player, if that's the foundation that this program is building on, then we're going to be in good shape. We've got a lot of soccer to learn, but at the same time, I would say that we are applying the principles we've been working on in training sessions on the field and that's a foundation. But as far as guts, I'm with this team. This is my sort of team."

VMS hosts Basalt today at 11 a.m., while Eagle Valley hosts Roaring Fork April 3.
