Time to play

The third annual event kicks off tomorrow at Dobson Arena between 2 and 8 p.m. The festival offers something for everybody, thus visitors of all ages and different tastes will find it entertaining. There is one condition though - they have to like to play.

"This is an incredible time for people of all ages to come out and have fun together," said Diane Johnson, Youth Services supervisor for Vail Recreation District. "Carnival games provide great opportunities for adults to play with their children and big kids to play with younger ones - everyone has a blast."

The festival's attractions are diverse, yet at the same time match interests to a variety of age groups.

Pre-school attendees will have a chance to visit a face painter or have a caricature artist sketch their silly faces. Once they become real warriors, princes and butterflies, they can start playing in a ball pit or a caterpillar crawl.

Those who already are in elementary school won't skip face painting either. Yet after they finally change into their favorite book or movie characters, they'll most probably be more happy with a climbing rock or a flexible leather which makes climbing a hard, yet exciting and challenging activity.

For middle-school kids and adults organizers have something that will test their skills, mental strength and balance. They'll feel the sensation of falling off the bull, the joy of finishing an obstacle course and the thrill of spinning till they can't see straight on a twin spin. When it's time to rest, they can always jump a little bit on inflatable bounces.

Additionally, Family Carnival will have special guests providing its participants with live entertainment. Jimmy Viles will perform a satire on recent popular movies. Stuart E. Hayner will fill Dobson Arena with magic and Jon the Juggler will present his juggling skills.

After the day full of jumping and screaming, the participants will be able to feed their empty stomachs and soothe their dry throats at a concession booth.

Tickets for the carnival are $9. Children under 3 play for free.

The proceeds of the event will benefit Vail Recreation District Youth Services which offers before and after-school programs for kids of all ages.

"Our goal is to make sure kids are safe when their parents are working," said Chad Young, a coordinator of Youth Services. "It's also about entertainment and promoting positive ways of recreation among children."
