MINTURN - By this time next week town officials and volunteers are expecting some good news from the state.

They're anticipating a check from the lottery-funded Greater Outdoors Colorado for $200,000 that will be used to replace Minturn's only park - the 15 year-old and run-down La Playuella Park on Cemetery Road next to the Eagle River.

The public/private effort to build a new park is combining small-town volunteerism and local and state funding to get the park built.

"It will be a high-quality, classy park," said Town Manager Ann Capela, adding that it will include a half basketball court, boat-launch, playground, climbing boulder and small outdoor amphitheater. The project is expected to cost $464,000.

"It's something the community needs," said volunteer Laura Wolf, who together with Kelly Brinkerhoff is helping coordinate a local volunteer effort to get the park built. "It's such a great spot along the river."

Wolf, Brinkerhoff and other volunteers have played a key role. They helped raise $40,000 in cash, contributions of labor and materials. Vail Architecture Group designed the park while the Minturn kicked in $15,000 and applied for funding and received $50,000 from Eagle County; $20,000 from the Minturn Community Fund and $5,000 from 1stBank. A retinue of private donors kicked in $38,000 and an additional $40,000 of labor and materials.

A later phase of the project could see athletic fields built in a nearby area where developers once wanted to build a recreational vehicle park. That idea was rejected by voters.

"Laura was one of the opponents of the RV park," Capela said. "After voters defeated it last fall, she came to the town and asked what we needed."

If the lottery grant is received as is anticipated, work on the new La Playuella Park will begin this summer and should be done by early fall, Capela said.

"We want to create a park that is more than a playground, (a park) that everyone - kids, seniors and families - can enjoy," said Wolf.
