Nikon wants baby photos

Print Comment
With the holidays approaching, parents will be snapping quite a few photos of their precious little pride and joys. Nikon is hosting their third annual "Pride and Joy" baby photo contest from now until Dec. 31.

To enter, upload your favorite photo at prideandjoybaby.com. The winner will receive a $25,000 savings bond and will be featured in an advertorial in LIFE Magazine. All finalists will receive a Nikon Coolpix Family Pack and all participants will receive a free 5x7 print from Best Buy ImageLab.

$5 from every entry fee goes directly to Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation, which benefits children with life-threatening and chronic illnesses.

The contest is nationwide and open to all children ages 36 months and under. Go to prideandjoybaby.com for complete details.

Here are some of Nikon's tips for taking photos of children:

Be Prepared: Who knows baby better than you? Study your baby's habits and take pictures when they are most comfortable, happy and well rested. Take as many pictures as you can. The more you take, the better your chances are of capturing that priceless moment.

Candid vs. Posed: It's not easy to capture that perfectly posed photo. Babies deliver a number of great photos naturally by just being themselves. Have a friend or relative keep baby's attention with a toy or noise while you capture the moment.

Keep the background simple: Make your baby the focus of the photo, remove the background clutter and keep it simple. You can eliminate these distractions by simply moving around when composing your photograph. This will deliver images that are clear and concise.

Say goodbye to red eye: Baby's bright eyes are more likely to produce "red-eye" so try and use a camera that has the InCamera Red Eye Fix feature to show your child's true baby blues, greens, or browns!

Zoom in on the details: Capturing a full-length shot of your baby can make a beautiful portrait - but zooming in on the eyes, hands and feet can also make for incredible photos. Use a camera with a c lose-up scene mode that helps you get the details you are looking for.

Take a baby's eye-view: Don't always take photos from grown-up level. Shooting from a variety of angles could always capture fun and interesting photos. By getting down to a baby's level you could catch shots from a new perspective - a baby's point of view.

It's digital: The advantages of digital photography are endless; you could view the photo you just took on the camera display screen and start sharing with friends and family instantly. Now that you can delete the photos you don't want, you have the freedom to shoot as many photos and save the ones that turned out best. Keep shooting, learning and enjoying.
