VAIL - For visitors to the Vail Valley, renting skis can be a hassle. Just when they're ready to hit the slopes after a journey to Vail, they have to deal with lines, paperwork and fittings.

Door to Door Ski Rentals, a new business in the valley that's working with Christy Sports, wants to cut out that annoyance, said owner Ben Saari.

"We eliminate the hassle," Saari said. "No long lines, no schlepping equipment."

The company delivers rental skis and snowboards, plus boots, poles and helmets - right to the door of visitors.

Customers can call the company's toll-free number or go to its Web site to request rental equipment. They are asked to give information on height, weight, skier ability, shoe size -even if they want a helmet.

The business started in Steamboat Springs in 2002 and is now in partnership with Christy Sports. The service has expanded to Sun Valley in Idaho, Breckenridge and the Vail Valley.

Delivery is offered in Vail, Beaver Creek and Avon. Door to Door delivers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They will usually deliver the afternoon or evening before a visitor's first day up on the slopes, Saari said, but deliveries can be done at any time.

Prices start at $35 per day for the "sport package" or for snowboards. The "performance package" - a stiffer ski that's better for intermediate or expert skiers - is $45 per day. A demo package - recently released skis - costs $55 per day.

The company replaces its rental equipment with new stuff every year, Saari said. Brands that the company rents include Rossignol, K2, Vokl, Burton, Nitro and Ride.

Bob Dapper, director of mountain operations for Christy Sports, said his company wanted to get into the delivery business because it has seen an increase in demand for such services.

Door to Door customers can come to the Christy outlets for service on their rentals or to buy skis or clothing, Dapper said.
