CMC finalizes sale of Vail campus

Cascade Village building will be redeveloped with homes and commercial space

VAIL - Colorado Mountain College officials closed on the sale of the college's Vail center Jan. 6, which was sold to 1310 Buffalo Properties LLC for $2.86 million.

The building, located in Vail's Cascade Village, had been on the market for close to two years, which included a stint on eBay.

"We never did get a bid on eBay," said Sam Skramstad, director of purchasing for the college.

More traditional sales tactics prevailed, and perseverance paid off when the college's Realtors, RE/MAX Vail Valley Inc., and selling broker Coldwell Banker Timberline Real Estate of Vail came together, Skramstad said.

"Plans are to develop the existing CMC space along with the existing Cascade Village Theater ... into 11 residences and some commercial/office/retail space," said Michael Hecht, a Vail resident and manager of 1310 Buffalo Properties.

The 15,000-square-foot space had been used for college classes for 20 years, but in late 2004 the Western Slope community college moved its Vail operations to the new 30,000-square-foot Vail-Eagle Valley Campus in Edwards.

Following the closing, Mike Devins and Bob Behrens of RE/MAX Vail Valley donated to a portion of their commission on the sale to the college, which in turn named a faculty work room at the Vail-Eagle Valley Campus in recognition of that $10,000 donation.

Devins, who graduated from the emergency medical technician and real estate programs at the college, said that when he saw the college's public request for proposals for a broker, he jumped at the chance to apply.

Colorado Mountain College's other campuses are in Eagle, Rifle, Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Aspen, Breckenridge, Dillon, Buena Vista, Steamboat Springs, Leadville and Glenwood Springs.
