VAIL - A new postal counter at the Vail Transportation Center should save some people a trip across the interstate for stamps.

The privately operated postal counter will open next to La Cantina on the third floor of the Transportation Center next Wednesday. The Vail Post Office is on the north side of the Interstate 70, across the interstate from Vail Village and Lionshead.

"(The Postal Service) looks for a location where they find there's a need for better access," said Matt Ehrlich of Edwards, who is operating the counter.

It will offer most of the services of a full post office, Ehrlich said. That includes express mail, stamps and boxes, Ehrlich said.

It will give customers a few more hours to do business than the regular post office does. The counter will be open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday.

In October, the Postal Service solicited bids from entrepreneurs to run the station. The space is rented from the town of Vail.

The Secret Stash Cafe coffee shop used to be at the site.
