VILAMOURA, Portugal - When the world's best ski racers return to Beaver Creek Nov. 28-Dec. 3 for the 2006 Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week, they will be presented with a new challenge on the world-renowned course.
The 2006-07 FIS race calendar, recently approved at the international governing body's biennial Congress in Vilamoura, Portugal, has Beaver Creek slated to host the new super combined event, which debuted on the World Cup circuit last season. The event, which will officially kick off the four-event competition, consists of one run of downhill and one run of slalom on the same day.
The Birds of Prey super combined will also mark the first time in the 41-year history of the World Cup that the men have contested a combined of any format in the United States. The event will be the first of five super combineds held during the 2006-2007 campaign.
"The new super combined is a very exciting concept for both racers and race fans," said Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation. "It is also a tribute to the entire Birds of Prey organization that we continue to be on the cutting edge of the sport."
The super combined will replace the Birds of Prey super-G, while the traditional downhill, giant slalom and slalom events would remain intact. The tentative schedule calls for super combined on Nov. 30, downhill on Dec. 1, giant slalom on Dec. 2 and slalom on Dec. 3.
The super combined will also showcase the talents of American Ted Ligety, who captured the Olympic gold medal in combined at the Torino Games, along with teammate Bode Miller.
The Visa Birds of Prey World Cup Race Week is a project of the Vail Valley Foundation. For additional information on Birds of Prey or the Foundation, visit www.vvf.org or contact (970) 949-1999.
