EDWARDS - As the Film for Thought: Free Film for Free Thinkers series concludes in Edwards on Monday, free-thinking film buffs can look forward to one documentary on pollution and renewable energy and two light-hearted films chronicling bike culture.
"Kilowatt Ours," by filmmaker Jeff Barrie, crosses the nation in search of solutions to America's growing energy crisis. Barrie examines mountain-top-removal mining, air pollution, haze in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, methylmercury contamination of newborns and childhood asthma before moving on to profile methods of energy conservation and innovation. The film invites viewers to help build a net-zero nation by personally conserving energy and espousing clean and renewable energy in the future.
The next film, "We are Traffic!," looks at the the Critical Mass bicycling movement, which galvanized a whole class of riders in the typically apathetic '90s. In over 200 cities in 14 different countries, Critical Mass is now a monthly ritual by which bicycle activists reclaim the streets while riding en masse.
The half-hour doc "Return of the Scorcher" chronicles bike culture from a more aesthetic perspective: Inspiring scenes of bike-riding culture are filmed in China, The Netherlands, Denmark and the U.S. The title comes from the 1890s when bicyclists were referred to as "Scorchers" because of their blazing speed, long before automobiles ruled the roads. "Scorchers" follows bicycling from its inception to its recent and growing renaissance.
