Palisade doubles up Eagle Valley

Print Comment
GRAND JUNCTION - Sometimes, angering an opponent works the opposite way.

The reaction by Palisade forward Lindsay Yaetes after Sarah Hoza tied Thursday's league game at the Peach Bowl, 1-1, tie mirrored Eagle Valley's season.

One good thing followed by a series of misfortunes.

Mary Cochrane won an earlier battle with Yeates. The Devils' goalie absorbed line drive with her stomach.

The stop got Yaetes angry.

"I was really upset after I missed that one, so I was determined to make the next one," she said.

A little more than 60 seconds later, Yaetes came through.

Controlling a loose ball in the middle of the field, the Palisade junior sent a low shot underneath a diving Cochrane to the right post to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead and the win.

"I don't like tie games, They make me uncomfortable," Yaetes said" "We hate to tie because we don't do well in ties and (the girls) didn't want to tie," added Bulldogs head coach Luann Elhers in her best Casey Stengel impression.

That doesn't mean Eagle Valley didn't have opportunities. Palisade goalie Amelia Davis was called on to make six her 10 saves in the second half. Her best stop came when the freshman pounced on a loose ball in front of the Devils' Jaclyn Taylor on the right side of the box in the waning seconds of the game.

The loss dropped Eagle Valley to 2-10-0 in the Slope and on the year entering today's Slope-finale with Moffat County at Gypsum Town Field at 4 p.m.
