Charter school shows promising test scores

AVON — Third graders at Stone Creek Elementary scored 86 percent proficiency on the 2007 reading portion of the Colorado Student Assessment Program, or CSAP.

The charter school, which isn’t a part of Eagle County School District, had higher scores than all but one school in the county, which was Brush Creek Elementary.

“The children faced some unusual circumstances this year and have had some good progress in spite of all that,” principal Betsy Hill said. “The teachers have remained focused on teaching, and we’ve protected the academic program overall.”

Hill said 85 percent of her students are proficient in English — a statistic Eagle County School district qualifies all their results with, but a statistic Hill doesn’t like to use.

“I wish they weren’t posted that way — we have a responsibility to all kids,” Hill said.
