The Town of Avon is hosting the Westin Riverfront Resort and Spa Whitewater Rodeo Series, an exciting new kayaking event series which will run Tuesday, May 29 and Tuesday, June 5, 2007. The event series starts at 5 p.m. and includes free kayak clinics taught by instructors at Alpine Quest Sports. The fun continues with a freestyle rodeo competition from 6-7:00 p.m. Competitors will be judged by Matt Soloman from World Cup Kayak Circuit and Ken Hoeve from Dagger Kayaks with a chance to win a cash prize. Award ceremonies and an after-event party will be held at Finnegans Wake at 7 p.m. on May 29 and June 5 with free appetizers and discounted drinks. The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa Whitewater Rodeo Series takes place at Avons Whitewater Park along the Eagle River recreational path located on the northeast side of the Eagle River at the intersection of Avon Road and Hurd Lane. Registration for the rodeo series will start at 4:30 p.m. on event day. The blue Town of Avon registration tent will be located on Hurd Lane just above Avons Whitewater Park. The Whitewater Park, designed by River Restoration of Glenwood and constructed by Ted Siepel Construction, was developed to establish a recreational destination along the Eagle River through Avon. The river enhancement project consists of a newly installed spectator viewing terrace, additional wetland planting and three river features: Baby Bob, Bob Jr., and Bob Sr. Designed to enhance the Eagle Rivers recreational appeal, the upstream feature, Baby Bob, will allow novice kayakers to hone their skills; Bob Jr., will cater to the intermediate freestyle kayaker; and Bob Sr., will thrill advanced freestyle kayakers and allow the Park to host competitive events. The Whitewater Park will dramatically increase the recreational opportunities that the Eagle River provides in the Town of Avon, said Town of Avon Engineer Shane Pegram. The new river features were designed to each perform optimally at different water levels so that recreational opportunities will exist throughout the spring and summer season. This increased opportunity is not only good for the Town of Avon, but for the entire Vail Valley. The event series is presented by Alpine Quest Sports, TV8, Village Warehouse Wines, The Madison, and Plum TV. Additional sponsors include The Vail Daily, The Parents Handbook, KZYR, Beaver Liquors, What To Do Magazine, Arrow Insurance and Larabar. For additional information please contact Danita Chirichillo; Special Events Coordinator at (970) 748-4032.
