Grab a compass: Xstream adventure race in town

In the world of adventure racing, Eagle County is king.

With some the best endurance athletes calling the high country home, it’s only logical that the terrain would be used to stage a race.

Saturday, the Adventure Xstream racing series returns to the county for both a 12-hour race and a sprint race.

The event, which starts and finishes at the Rancho del Rio area close to State Bridge, features a paddling section in both Class I and II water, a mountain bike, a trek and a navigation portion. For the sprint race, participants will complete the same legs, but in shorter distances.

Even organizer Will Newcomer said there is a mixed field of participants among the several categories.

“We have a lot of weekend warriors and some semi-pro teams from the area,” Newcomer said. “The (sprint) race is good for beginners. You can race side-by-side with some of the top athletes in the country.”

The Vail race is the fifth of six in the series, which culminates with the Xstream Expedition in Moab, Utah at the end of this month.

“(Vail) is one of the more popular venues,” Newcomer said. “It’s got a great location with the Upper Colorado (River).”

A large chunk of racers are from Colorado, with a fair share of teams from other parts of the country.

There were still a few spots open in the race as of Wednesday evening. The race gets underway at 7:30 a.m.
