SUMMIT COUNTY — The victim of Sunday’s single vehicle rollover crash between Copper Mountain and Vail Pass has been identified as 18-year-old Rebecca Peterson, of Broomfield, said Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson.
Peterson was pronounced dead at Swedish Medical Center, where she was flown after she was partially ejected from the Lexus SUV she was riding in Sunday afternoon.
The driver, 19-year-old Julie Charo, also of Broomfield, was in the left land heading westbound on Interstate 70 when she became distracted and traveled off the road, said Colorado State Patrol Trooper Ryan Sullivan.
Charo swerved back onto the road, but overcorrected, causing the SUV to roll multiple times down a steep embankment, coming to rest 165 feet from the interstate, Sullivan said.
Firefighters extracted Peterson from the wreckage and performed CPR for 22 minutes before she was airlifted.
Charo was taken to Summit Medical Center with moderate injuries.
Peterson was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, Richardson said.
Neither drugs nor alcohol are considered a contributing factor in the crash, Sullivan said. He didn’t know whether investigators were considering excessive speed a factor.
Any potential charges against Charo are pending the outcome of the investigation into the accident, Sullivan said.

Ugly weekend
The fatal wreck was one of three over the weekend in Summit and Clear Creek counties, which are both covered by Colorado State Patrol’s Frisco troop. On Saturday morning, an Aurora man died after his car collided with a parked Colorado Department of Transportation bulldozer on Highway 91 between Copper Mountain and Leadville.
On Sunday afternoon, a motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Highway 6 in Clear Creek County, Sullivan said.
Also on Sunday, an eight-month-old child was ejected from a vehicle during an accident on eastbound I-70 near Georgetown, but survived with moderate injuries, Sullivan said.
