Eagle woman charged in fatal crash

EAGLE " An Eagle woman has been charged for her involvement in a head-on collision in which 27-year-old Rebecca Yarberry, of Vail, was killed, authorities said.

Ofelia Medrano is accused of falling asleep while driving her Ford Ranger pickup east on Interstate 70 Sept. 18.

Medrano crossed the Dowd Junction median and her pickup went airborne for 54 feet and hit the Toyota Camry driven by Yarberry, who was headed west, the Colorado State Patrol said.

Yarberry was pronounced dead at the accident scene. Medrano was taken to Vail Valley Medical Center, where she was in stable condition before she was released, said Jonathan Hoehn, spokesman for the hospital.

Yarberry had hurt her foot and was driving to Edwards for a physical therapy appointment to prepare for an upcoming triathlon, said her father, Dr. Steve Yarberry.

Yarberry was a dedicated triathlete, twice qualifying for nationals in Xterra triathlons, her father said.

She worked at Colorado Mountain Medical, where she began as a medical assistant and became a clinical supervisor training and hiring medical assistants. She worked with her father, a family practice doctor at the clinic, and had planned to attend graduate school to become a physician's assistant.

Medrano is accused of careless driving causing death, a traffic misdemeanor that carries a penalty of 10 days to 1 year in jail and a $100 to $1,000 fine, said Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert.

Steve Yarberry declined to say whether he thought the charge against Medrano was adequate.

"We just miss Becky, so it doesn't really matter right now," he said.
