NPR station broadcasting again

But more problems occurred with KUNC’s signal Tuesday

EAGLE COUNTY — After 3 months of crackling static, public radio station KUNC (99.7 FM) can be heard once again in the valley.

The Greeley-based station came back on Sunday afternoon after being off-air since July 23. The broadcasting trouble was caused by moving a translator — or a station that receives and sends signals — from Pierce to Buckhorn Mountain, which is closer to Front Range listeners, said station manager Neil Best.

However, moving the translator caused the signal to be weakened on Castle Peak, cutting out broadcasts to the valley. The station had to wait for a new tuner and translator to be built and ordered from Canada and installed near Breckenridge, Best said.

That should sort out the signals and prevent the problem from happening again, he said.

“It’s been very frustrating because I know how supportive the listening audience has been. People have sent notes hoping we’ll be back on air soon,” he said.

However, the station’s troubles are not over yet. On Tuesday a problem with the translator in Summit County caused the station to go off air again.

Best said he hopes the problem should be fixed shortly and listeners should be able to enjoy their favorite programs soon.
