VAIL — A Vail restaurant is about to make its debut on national television.
Sweet Basil, celebrating its 30th year, is featured in a segment of the Food Network’s syndicated television show “Giada’s Weekend Getaways” scheduled for broadcast on the Food Network on Friday, Nov. 9, at 8:30 p.m. MST. The show is scheduled for rebroadcast again that night at 11:30 p.m., then again Sunday, Nov. 25 at 12:30 p.m.
In the segment — part of an episode taped in September that visits various locations throughout the Colorado Rockies — celebrity chef, author and television personality Giada De Laurentiis dines on Sweet Basil’s herb-grilled rainbow trout with zucchini-tomato salsa, arugula puree, sautéed gnocchi and brown butter.
“The Food Network has a very loyal fan base of foodies, and it’s great to get the national recognition,” Jana Morgan, the restaurant’s marketing manager, told Ted Alvarez of the Vail Daily, who covered the shoot posing as an extra. “When the decision was finally made and Sweet Basil was selected, we were thrilled.”
The daughter of film producer Dino De Laurentiis, Giada De Laurentiis is one of Food Network’s most popular celebrity hosts. In addition to “Giada’s Weekend Getaways” — in which she visits cities and towns that are ideal for three-day, food-filled weekends — she hosts the cooking show “Everyday Italian” and “Behind the Bash,” a behind-the-scenes look at creating the world’s most spectacular parties. De Laurentiis also is the author of two best-selling cookbooks, “Everyday Italian: 125 Simple and Delicious Recipes” and “Giada’s Family Dinners.”
“We treated her the way we usually treat people; we try to give everyone the five-star treatment and make everyone feel as welcome as Giada,” said Sweet Basil’s Matt McConnell, who served De Laurentiis on camera.
“I asked her how much she enjoyed Vail, and she mentioned how nice everybody is here and that she had a great time,” added Alisha Quinn, a hostess at the restaurant. “I know it’s her job, but it seemed like she genuinely liked her experience here at Sweet Basil.”
Visitors to the online Zagat Survey recently voted Sweet Basil Colorado’s most popular restaurant. With a list of more than 500 fine wines from around the world, the restaurant is renowned for its imaginative cuisine. Lunch and dinner are served daily, brunch Saturdays and Sundays. During the winter season, the bar is open for après ski and throughout the day.
