EAGLE COUNTY, COLORADO " The goal of Anthony Bourdain's show "No Reservations" on the Travel channel is to give viewers a suggestive glimpse of the locations " what it feels like, sounds like, smells like to walk down a crowded street lined with food stalls brimming with local fare. Anthony's new book, "No Reservations: Around The World On An Empty Stomach," is a way to share the cumulative effort of the last three years of planes, trains, hotels and certainly food experiences through the medium of photography. This book certainly succeeds on this level.
Just about anyone who is a part of, or just interested in, the culinary world has read his previous work, "Kitchen Confidential," which was his memoir of a rather wild ride in the professional kitchen. His television show carries over his unabashed approach to the world of food and culture, but his present incarnation is on the receiving end of the culinary experience. We get to share in Anthony's journey away from the confines of the kitchen as he explores the culture of food found around the globe.
This book is definitely meant as a scrapbook of sorts of the current pursuits of the "No Reservations" crew. It is not meant to be simply a companion piece to the television series. However, if you do enjoy the show, this photographic journey will certainly give many new insights into Anthony's travels, and his commentary on the locations and individual photographs is worth reading just for his unique viewpoint that has made him such a popular author. As for the body of photography in the book, the depth of color captured in the location photographs makes this an appealing work for fans of travel books or photography in general.
