MINTURN, Colorado – The Vail Pass Winter Recreation Fee Program, which began in January of 1998, will continue into its tenth season by opening November 23, depending upon snow conditions.

“Of course, if we don’t get enough snow that could change our plans. But with the predicted snow coming in the next few days we are remaining hopeful that we will open,” said Mike Bartholow, lead Backcountry Ranger for the Vail Pass Recreation Area.

The Vail Pass Winter Recreation Fee Area encompasses over 50,000 acres and extends from Copper Mountain on the east, Vail Mountain on the West, Camp Hale on the South and the I-70 corridor on the North. The program is the result of many years of collaborative efforts between the Vail Pass Task Force, a citizen’s advisory group, and the Forest Service. Together they manage the area for the public’s enjoyment.

The fees collected provide maps, groomed trails, signs, marking and maintenance of routes, enforcement, parking management, visitor information and backcountry monitoring by uniformed personnel.

The fees are $6 per person per day with children 13 and under free. Passes are available at all trailheads. Season Passes are $40 and are available at the Vail Pass Information Booth, and at the Dillon and Holy Cross Ranger Districts. Fees will be collected through April 30, 2008.

For more information, please contact the Dillon Ranger District (970-468-5400) or Holy Cross Ranger District (970-827-5715).
