Ghent, Schleper come through at NorAms

After closing out 2007 with some solid performances, a pair of Vail Valley skiers kicked off the new year flying just as fast.

Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s Erika Ghent, who was second and third in a pair of Surefoot giant slaloms at Vail two weeks ago, took 15th in a North American Cup giant slalom at Mount Ste. Anne, Quebec, on Friday.

Ghent started with the 44 bib and had one of the fastest second runs to be one of seven Americans in the top 15.

“It was good to get two runs,” Ghent said. “I was going for it on both runs. I was able to ski like in training, which is good.”

Hunter Schleper, who skis with Iced Out Racing, had two stellar finishes in Surefoot Colorado Cup super-G races in mid-December, followed by a win in a Smartwool slalom in late December. Schleper, a second-year J2 racer, continues to stand out against racers several years his elder and took in two top-25 finishes in NorAms this week.

On Thursday, Schleper started with the 55 bib and took 24th. Then on Friday, Schleper had two fast runs to take 19th, less than a second out of the top 10.

“He beat almost all of the (U.S. Ski Team) Developmental guys,” said Bruce Knoepfel, Iced Out’s coach. “It’s pretty telling.”

The next-closest J2 racer was in 31st. SSCV’s Will Gregorak, a J1, also had a great race and took 28th.

In Surefoot Colorado Cup races last month, local racers found considerable success. SSCV’s Whitney Setterberg topped all J2 racers in a super-G at Winter Park and was fourth overall, followed by teammate Joelle Chevalier in sixth overall. Then, in a giant slalom at Vail that saw Ghent take second, Setterberg was fifth, and 10 SSCV athletes were in the top 23, with Christa Ghent (7th), Delainey Ackerman (13th) and Georgia Wettlaufer (15th) in the top 15.

In a men’s slalom on Dec. 22, SSCV’s Paul Britvar was eighth, one spot ahead of teammate John Kemp, good enough for first and second among juniors, respectively. SSCV had two others in the top 20: Rett Smith (18th) and Nathan Asoian (20th). Iced Out’s Schleper was 21st with teammate Kitt Flowers in 23rd. In a slalom the following day, Britvar and Kemp were in the top 15.

SSCV’s Taylor Wettlaufer won a Smartwool giant slalom Dec. 22, while SSCV’s Greta Byrne was second and third in a slalom and giant slalom at Vail.

Daino picked for Session

Ski & Snowboard Club Vail rider Bryan Daino was selected to competed in the Honda Session in February. Daino will be the only local rider competing in the rails and slopestyle contest, which brings top riders from around the world to Vail’s Golden Peak.
