SUMMIT COUNTY, Colorado — The recovery of the snowmobiler who died late Monday, John McKibben of Kremmling, was put on hold Wednesday due to extreme weather conditions in the Spring Creek area.

The two surviving members of the party, Craig Morris of Naples, Fla., and Murry Melloni of Littleton, had been missing since Sunday in the Elliot Ridge area near Mahan Lake.

The two men were found Tuesday evening on the west side of the Ridge and airlifted to the Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. Initial search and rescue efforts were concentrated on the east side of the Ridge.

The two survivors were interviewed by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday in an attempt to pinpoint the location of McKibben. Morris and Melloni were shown maps of the area where they were found, and it was determined the location of their campsite was about two to three miles down on the west side of the Ridge in Eagle County.

The search and recovery mission has now been turned over to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, and the Vail Mountain Rescue Group will be taking over the recovery efforts.
