PUEBLO, Colorado — Wanted: Guards for a potentially hazardous site where the military is preparing to destroy lethal mustard-gas weapons.
Lt. Col. Christopher Chesney says it's been difficult to fill positions at the Pueblo Chemical Depot because he competes for people with the federal penitentiary in nearby Florence.
During a meeting of the Colorado Chemical Demilitarization Citizens Advisory Commission this week, Chesney said he will need about 200 security guards when the work begins. That's up from the current work force of 126.
He says the Army's Chemical Materials Agency pays a bonus to guards who agree to stay.
The Pueblo depot stores more than 2,600 tons of mustard agent in projectiles and cartridges.
