Tucked right off the ice rink, the Beaver Creek General Store is the only place in Beaver Creek you can buy groceries, coffee mugs, homemade fudge and T-shirts. "We're trying to be a one-stop shop for clothing, groceries, souvenirs chocolate, ice cream and, well, everything," said Donna Whalen, who opened the shop with her husband, Herb, in 2001. "We have gourmet chocolates, homemade fudge and ice cream and we're the only location up here to have groceries and over-the-counter medications." But their most popular items include magnets, hat pins and keychain-type items.
The Moose's Caboose on Vail's Bridge Street is nothing if not diverse. Boasting candy, pottery, wooden sculptures, bird feeders, knickknacks and paddywhacks, Goerge and Candi Knox's shop takes at least three or four visits to see the whole shebang. And even then it's hard. The couple supports local craftsmen, and has a whole line of art made by Colorado artists. If you want to take home a true piece of Vail, grab a manhole cover. Buy one, that is. Town of Vail employees got so tired of having overzealous visitors steal the ones on the street they began offering manhole-inspired items. Necklaces, bracelets and small to large manhole covers are on sale. They've been bricked into driveways, used as trivets and tiled into kitchen walls. They're found at the Town of Vail offices.
