Skiing & snowboarding, Colorado's official winter sports?

Print Comment
DENVER, Colorado — You might wonder 'Aren't skiing and snowboarding already Colorado's winter sport?"

Or, "If they aren't, what else could possibly have that title?"

Well, state Reps. Gwynn Green and Christine Scanlan are co-sponsoring a resolution making skiing and snowboarding state's official winter sport.

“Of course skiing and snowboarding are the official winter sports. There is no other winter sport that appeals to Coloradans of all ages and is so much a part of our rich outdoor history," said Scanlan, Eagle County's state representative.

Last summer, then 9-year-old William “Citizen” Kane contacted Rep. Green with the idea. During a Colorado history class at Dennison Elementary in Lakewood, it occurred to William that there was no official state sport designated in Colorado.

“I told him to gather some petition signatures to make sure there was support for the idea," Green said. " A few weeks later he reported back to me that he had 70 signatures."

William and his family, including his twin brother Matthew, and their entire fourth grade class from Dennison Elementary School in Lakewood, visited the capitol to watch the vote on the resolution.

The resolution passed the state House and will now be voted on by the state Senate. Resolutions do not require a signature of the Governor before being officially recognized.

If passed, skiing and snowboarding would join a prestigious list, which includes the state flower (white and lavender columbine) and state bird (lark bunting) among 17 others.
