Ryan Adams, Arlo Guthrie to perform in Telluride

TELLURIDE — Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, Arlo Guthrie, and Hot Rize (with Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers), complete the lineup for the 35th annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival, set for June 19-22 in Telluride. The lineup for this year’s festival includes a mix of young talent, legends, and the many artists who have defined the Telluride sound. Festival favorites Leftover Salmon and Hot Rize (with Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers) reunite for special Telluride performances. Prolific songwriter Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Scottish soul-pop singer Paolo Nutini, and sweet-voiced country singer Tift Merritt make their first appearance at Telluride Bluegrass. The legendary Arlo Guthrie and country-soul pioneer Solomon Burke perform on the Telluride stage for the first time.

Unique collaborations abound all weekend, including Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby with the traditional bluegrass band Kentucky Thunder, award-winning songwriter Darrell Scott and John Cowan, and a special set of “Duos with Friends” by banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck.

The many musicians who have defined the Telluride Bluegrass sound return — including the King of Telluride, Sam Bush, who performs for his 34th straight year. The Telluride House Band again features some of the world’s greatest string musicians, including Bush, Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer and Bryan Sutton. Meanwhile, the younger generation of stringband musicians is well-represented, including Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile, Uncle Earl and The Duhks.

Recent Oscar winners Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova from the film “Once” perform both as the stripped-down acoustic The Swell Season and with one of the only 2008 dates for the Irish rock band The Frames. Iconic singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco returns for her third Telluride appearance, while contemporary acoustic musicians Yonder Mountain String Band return for their ninth straight year.

While camping and festival passes are still available, ticket demand is high for the 10,000-person festival. Camping in the traditional Town Park campground sold-out through an online lottery in November, while nearby Warner Field camping sold-out the day tickets went on sale in December. This year’s festival coincides with the summer solstice — the longest day of the year on June 21 — and the full moon. The town of Telluride is located at an elevation of 8,750 feet in Southwestern Colorado.
