The Moiseev Russian Classical Ballet will perform "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Vilar Performing Arts Center on Saturday.
BEAVER CREEK The Moiseev Russian Classical Ballet brings to life Tchaikovskys timeless ballet masterpiece The Sleeping Beauty Saturday night at the Vilar Performing Arts Center. The troupe returns for an encore performance they performed Swan Lake in 2007 at the Vilar Center.
This classical dance favorite is presented by a 55-member company from the same eastern country where The Sleeping Beauty premiered in 1890.
The Sleeping Beauty, a crowning jewel of Marius Petipas career, is often considered the finest achievement of the classical ballet. It is a grandiose and refined blending of traditional mime, expressive pas daction and divertissements in a lavish, theatrical setting. Tchiakovsky was delighted with the invitation to write the music for a ballet based on Charles Perraults well known fairy tale.
The story tells of a young princess, condemned at her christening by an evil fairy to die on her 16th birthday. By the grace of a gift from a good a fairy, the princess is saved and destined to only sleep until awakened by the kiss of a prince.
The Moiseev Russian Classical Ballet was founded in 1999 with the help and support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. The company was brought together and inspired by its leaders: General Director, Vladimir Moiseev, a soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre and grandson of legendary Russian ballet-master Igor Moiseev, and Artistic Director Evgeny Amosov.
Tickets for The Sleeping Beauty are $58 and are available by calling the Vilar Center Box Office at 845-TIXS or by visiting www.vilarpac.org.
