Gypsum school getting new emergency access

GYPSUM, Colorado — Buses and fire trucks will have quicker access to Gypsum Elementary School as part of the upcoming renovation at Eagle Valley High.
A restricted access road will be built along the south side of the high school campus, connecting to the elementary school’s parking area, said Diana Scott, Eagle County Schools director of buildings and grounds.
School buses will use the road daily and emergency vehicles also will have access; but other traffic will be prohibited.
“It will allow us some flexibility for the bus problems we have at Gypsum Elementary,” Scott said. “The goal is to take a load off Schoolside Drive.”
Because the road will be located so close to the elementary, Scott said, school officials did not want to build a direct connector from Valley Road that could potentially bring heavy traffic. She said such a road would be a safety concern for the school. Limiting use to buses and emergency vehicles was a good compromise, she said.
Gypsum Fire Chief Dave Vroman agreed. “It’s really going to help us provide service to both schools. It is essential, absolutely.”
