BOULDER, Colorado — A supercomputer nicknamed Bluefire is up and running at a federal lab in Boulder, to help scientists with atmospheric research.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research says the new IBM Power 575 Hydro-Cluster computer can perform 76 trillion operations per second.

Scientists will use it to better understand severe weather events and climate change.

Tom Bettge of NCAR's Computational and Information Systems Laboratory said Thursday that the supercomputer will be fully operational in August.
