VAIL — When the riders for this summer’s Colorado Stage International Cycle Classic take to the road, they’ll get a nice introduction to the Rocky Mountains.
The Vail Valley Foundation recently finalized the courses for the three stages of the Eagle-County based race, which will run from Aug. 22-24.
On the first day, the riders will compete in a 130-mile road race from Breckenridge to Beaver Creek. The course, which features more than 11,000 feet of vertical gain, will go over Hoosier Pass (11,524 feet), head south into Alma and Buena Vista on Colorado Highway 285. From there, the riders will go north on U.S. Highway 24 through Leadville and Minturn, and then continue on U.S. Highway 6 before a 3-mile climb up to Beaver Creek Village.
The second day of the event will feature a circuit race through Vail, with riders completing 8.5 laps on an 8.5-mile loop. From the start on Gore Creek Drive in Vail Village, riders will head West on Forest Road to Lionshead and continue to West Vail before coming back to the Vail Village. Organizers expect the lap time to be 20 minutes.
Sunday, the riders will compete in the time trial that follows the Coors Classic route from Vail Village to the cul-de-sac in East Vail. The 10-mile course is almost all uphill, with about 1,500 feet of elevation gain. The same course will be used for the Hill Climb at the Teva Mountain Games in June.
The stage race will feature 15 teams of eight riders. Organizers have received verbal commitments from several international pro tour teams and are in the process of inviting domestic teams.
Before Sunday’s time trial, there will be a citizens ride from Beaver Creek to Tennessee Pass and back.
During the races, there will be rolling closures, although none of the races will disrupt access from the Interstate or Vail Parking Structures.
