AVON, Colorado — A man whom Avon police arrested Friday is accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman in Denver in December.

Cung Van Do, 29, of Denver, pulled a woman into his car near downtown Denver, threatened her with a weapon and sexually assaulted her Dec. 2 after 1 a.m., Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. Jackson declined to release further details.

Do has an extensive criminal record including convictions on felony assault, theft and drug charges, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records. Do also has been acquitted of attempted first-degree murder and assault.

A spokeswoman for the Denver District Attorney’s Office could not comment on the case Monday.

Do was being held in the Eagle County Jail Monday afternoon on a $1 million bond.

“He’s a pretty bad dude if they put a million dollar bond on him,” Avon Police Detective Paul Arnold said.

Avon Police had called Do a murder suspect because a similar charge was listed on the alert, Avon Police spokeswoman Krista Jaramillo said. Denver authorities probably wanted to convey that Do is dangerous, Jaramillo said.

“I think that’s where it was misunderstood,” she said.

Avon police found Do working in a nail shop, which police declined to name, after Denver police sent out a state-wide alert about Do Thursday. Do was wanted on second-degree sexual assault, false imprisonment, menacing and second-degree kidnapping charges, Jackson said.

Denver Police said he was known to work in nail shops, so Avon police went looking around at nail shops in the area and found him, Arnold has said.
