U.S. little league team to play in Cuba

RUTLAND, Vt. — A little league team from Vermont and New Hampshire plan to travel to Cuba to play baseball this summer.

The members of the Connecticut Valley South Little League all-star team expect to play at least a game a day in the Havana area during a 10-day trip in August, coach Ted Levin said.

It took 20 months to obtain a travel license from the U.S. Treasury Department after the team's application was turned down numerous times, Levin said.

Levin said he's heard of only one other similar youth trip, since the U.S. imposed embargo on Cuba nearly 50 years ago. A California team planned to travel to the Caribbean island in 2000, but Levin said he's unsure if the trip happened.

"If this isn't the first, it's one of the first since the embargo," he said.

The Twin-State Peregrines, which is not supported by the Little League, now needs to raise $45,000 for the trip.
