Controversial Colo. lawmaker faces election challenge

Print Comment
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — Controversial state Rep. Douglas Bruce faces a little-known challenger in the Republican primary, but one analyst says the lack of name recognition may not be a problem.

Bruce had a stormy first term, and Colorado College political scientist Bob Loevy says Bruce himself is the issue in this year's election.

The Colorado Springs lawmaker faces newcomer Mark Waller in the August primary.

Bruce was a midterm appointment to the Legislature. He angered legislative leaders by refusing to take office until after the session opened, making him eligible for an extra term under term-limits laws.

Bruce made headlines for kicking a photographer on the floor of the House and calling migrant workers "illiterate peasants."
