With the Fourth of July only a week away, everyone knows: summer has truly arrived. The season is rich with cultural and entertainment events. Many are already underway, and the diverse offerings continue into September. Here is a quick overview of all the wonderful things in store across the valley for culture lovers this summer.
Locals are flocking to the Vail Valley Foundations free concerts series, with the Bud Light Hot Summer Nights free shows packing the amphitheater each Tuesday and the American National Bank Showdown Town bringing droves of happy picnicking fans to Eagle Town Park each Thursday.
The Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival opened this week with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, led by renowned band leader and trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling. Long a Festival favorite is the Rochester Philharmonic, opening tonight at the Ford Amphitheater. The evenings rep features the music of Mozart, Mendelssohn and Shostakovich. The music festival continues through July, with residences by The Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic.
The Vilar Summer concert series begins this Sunday with Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/producer Richard Marx and Vertical Horizons lead vocalist/guitarist Matt Scannell. This special acoustic evening will feature both artists performing Marxs hits including Endless Summer Nights, Dont Mean Nothing and Right Here Waiting, as well as those of Vertical Horizon, including Everything You Want. Dont miss this opportunity to see two fantastic artists performing their hits together in a reinvented, acoustic style.
And the Marx/Scannell show is only the beginning. The Vilar Performing Arts Center is pleased to present a series of 12 great concerts throughout the summer months, including Clint Black, Todd Rundgren, Emmy Lou Harris, Pat Benetar, John Hiatt with special guest Joan Osborne, as well as a 40th anniversary tribute to the epic album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, performed by Todd Rundgren, Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Bo Bice, Christopher Cross and Denny Laine, formerly of the Moody Blues and Wings.
In addition to this incredible lineup, the Vilar Performing Arts Center is host to a variety of dance, classical music, theatre and documentary film throughout these splendid months ahead. We are proud to be the venue of choice for the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festivals Chamber Music series in July and August. The Vail International Dance Festival presents some of the greatest stars and dance companies from around the world from July 27 through Aug. 10, with some performances on our stage and others at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. For musical theater lovers, the Vail Valley Theatre Company will present the musical revue Side by Side by Sondheim on July 19 and 20. And the Vail Performing Arts Academy showcases the talent of our local youth in Willy Wonka Jr. on Aug. 15 and 16.
And finally, every Tuesday from Aug. 20 through Sept. 10, the Vail Symposium presents the Beaver Creek Film Series, featuring four documentary film screenings with commentary led by acclaimed Denver film critic Walter Chow.
