Town Talk Towers

Movie madness

Hey there and welcome to Saturday at Town Talk Towers, where we’re ready to announce the official kickoff of the Summer Blockbuster Season! Technically we know you should not be in a dark movie theater but out climbing cliffs, shooting rapids or pedaling up Vail Pass. But hey, even you outdoor over-achievers need a break from all that exercise, so grab some corn and a vat of bad-for-you soda and try a little sedentary action.

Sure, we know some big movies have already come out, but so far as we’re concerned, it’s just not summer until the new Will Smith Fourth of July movie is out. This year, that’s “Hancock,” which has the wonderful premise of a super hero who’s kind of a jerk and a drunk gets a publicist to help burnish his image.

There’s also something about a lonely robot, an Angelina Jolie vehicle involving a lot of car chases and weaponry, and what’s being hailed as The Worst Mike Meyers’ Movie Ever. You should go see it anyway, because studies show your internal movie critic meter is only 43 percent enabled in summertime. Even if it sucks, in other words, you’ll hardly be able to tell the difference! Weird, eh?

In other movie news, we were a little upset to see that Uma Thurman is engaged. Not that any of us here at Town Talk Towers thought we had a chance, but one likes to hold out hope. Actually, we wish Uma luck but we’re amazed that the guy who just gave her an 8-carat rock - some rich dude named “Arki” - was previously married to Elle Macpherson.

Seems like you should only be allotted one megababe zillionaire per lifetime. But who are we to understand such things?

Moving onto more local matters, we should just remind you that there is ample reason to get out and about this weekend. The farmers markets are going on all over the place, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival is taking off, the Betty Ford Gardens are open for the 20th season, Eagle Flight Days are going on and the annual Pygmy Marmoset Fanciers Convention is taking place in Bond.

OK, we’re just kidding about that last one, but you get the point: There’s a ton of stuff going on, so check it out. Find out the details by looking through this fine paper in your hands, and you will know all …

We out.

History quiz and book giveaway

Know your Eagle County history: We continue our history quiz today with a question for you downvalley’ers: What was the original name of Eagle?

The first Town Talk readers to respond with the correct answer to this question will get a copy of the “The Eagle River Valley” by Shirley Welch and the Eagle County Historical Society.

Send your responses to towntalk@vaildaily.com.

Congrats to April Nottinghame who correctly identified lettuce as the big crop in the Avon/Beaver Creek area in the 1920s. Kathy Macy, Erin Vega, Corinne Farnen and Kay Cheney also got it right.
