Firefighters expect to contain Rifle blaze

Fire started Sunday around 3 p.m. and the cause of the fire is still under investigation

RIFLE, Colorado — A wildfire that burned 12.6 acres on private land north of Rifle near mile marker 7 on Highway 13 Sunday, is expected to be contained by Monday evening.

“It’s pretty much contained at this point,” said Lathan Johnson, assistant fire management officer for the Upper Colorado Interagency Fire Management Center. “It’s not actively spreading and we expect containment by the end of the day.”

The fire started Sunday around 3 p.m. and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to earlier reports. Two structures were threatened but none have been damages at this time.

Earlier reports stated the fire was not spreading Sunday evening and crews would remain on scene throughout the night. As of Monday morning, Johnson said the fire is, “still holding steady at 12.6 acres,” and that it was not actively spreading.

On the scene Monday remained three federal Bureau of Land Management fire engines and an eight-person squad, along with a Rifle Fire Protection District Water truck and crew.
