Arizona artist to teach painting workshop in Edwards

Print Comment
A watercolor workshop with Arizona teacher and artist Kathie Neal is set for July 10-12 at Vail Christian High School in Edwards. The title of Neal’s class is “Creating Texture in Watercolor.” The class will focus on techniques and tricks for making paintings sparkle and shine.

“The first day we will experiment with all different ways to create texture,” Neal said. “Then we will have each student transfer a quilt pattern of their choice onto the watercolor paper. We will then cut apart the pattern and employ all the various ways we learned to impart texture onto the individual pieces.”

The textured pieces will be reassembled to create unique watercolor “quilts.”
The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily with a break for lunch. Cost for the three-day workshop is $195.

In Arizona Neal teaches eight art classes a week for beginner through advanced artists. She is well loved by her students for her technique and personality.

“I never dreamed I could learn to paint and have fun at the same time,” said local student Suzie Shepard. “I am amazed at what I have been able to do with Kathie’s guidance. She can fix any mistake, which is a miracle in watercolor. This is a wonderful opportunity for the valley.”

Neal is president of the Contemporary Watercolorists of Arizona and a member of the Arizona Artist Guild and the Arizona Watercolor Association.

She shows her own paintings in juried shows. She has painted most of her life, in all all mediums and has won many awards. For more information, call 970-328-3636. A limited number of students of all abilities will be accepted.
