Arrowhead Alpine Club raises $66K for breast cancer walk

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colorado — A team of women from the Arrowhead Alpine Club raised $66,500 for breast cancer research and care at last month’s Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

The team was the highest fundraising team in the Rocky Mountain region, and team member Sue Sewell was also the highest individual fundraiser for the event, raising $15,500.

“The whole weekend was a positive and uplifting experience. I was personally inspired by the people we met along our walk and by the strength of my team members,” said team captain Nadine Davis of her team, which included four breast cancer survivors.

Team members were Linda Cormack, Nadine Davis, Linda Hendricks, Paula O’Leary, Nancy McPhetridge, Patricia Nolan, Judy Pecsok, Shelby Plath, Susan Riccardella, Mary Ann Scherpf, Sue Sewell, Lois Solomon, Anne Trumpower and Eve Trumpower.

The weekend walk event included 1,500 walkers and was supported by a crew of volunteers at aid stations. The first day’s walk was 26.2 miles with scenic views across Lake Dillon. The second day was 13.1 miles along the bike path from Breckenridge to Frisco. The courses totaled more than 40 miles at 9,000 feet.

“After all the training and fundraising, I feel that everyone enjoyed the weekend because it gave us something we could do about a disease that leaves people feeling so helpless,” Davis said.

The event collectively raised $3.3 million nationwide. Money from the walk goes toward advancing access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer.

Recipients of the funds raised from the event include the University of Colorado Cancer Center in Aurora, Denver’s Project Angel Heart, which provides home-delivered meals and nutritional counseling for breast cancer patients, and Denver Health and Hospital Corporation, which runs a mobile mammography program.

Road in Avon closed Tuesday

AVON — Eastbound Yoder Avenue will be closed from Post Boulevard to Wal-Mart, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The Eagle River Water and Sanitation District will install a new fire hydrant, among other improvements.

Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Traer Creek Plaza will be accessible from Fawcett Road.
