DENVER, Colorado — Denver has recorded 11 straight days of 90 degree temperatures, and six more days of hot weather are in the forecast.
If the heat wave continues, the city could break or match the record of 18 straight days with temperatures in the 90s.
The record was set in 1874 and matched again in 1901. Both stretches came in July.
Bernie Meier of the National Weather Service says the average temperature for Denver in July is 89.
"It's July. It's supposed to be hot and dry," said Meier.
Meanwhile, despite signs that monsoons might arrive early so far the flow has only reached the southwestern part of the state. Meier said major rains from the monsoon aren't likely before August.
Several weekend fires were contained Sunday. A 115-acre wildfire was still burning Wednesday near Parachute. Fire spokesman David Boyd said more than 100 firefighters were working on the blaze, which was expected to be fully contained Wednesday night.
