Most of us have our eye on November, when we’ll be asked to vote for the next president of the United States, pick who will represent us in Congress and select a couple of county commissioners.
But there’s one race that Eagle County needs to consider before Election Day. On Tuesday, Democratic voters in the Second Congressional District will be asked to decide who should represent them at the ballot box in November.
Surely anyone with a telephone, a mailbox or a TV knows something about the three-way race between Joan Fitz-Gerald, Jared Polis and Will Shafroth to become the Democratic candidate in the November election. The race has become the costliest congressional primary in Colorado history, the Rocky Mountain News reports, with the three candidates raising more than $9 million.
Fitz-Gerald made history when she became the first woman to be electing president of the Colorado state senate. She advocates an immediate withdrawal from the war in Iraq and an end No Child Left Behind. Polis, a successful businessman, is best known for his involvement in education. He established the New America School, which has a campus in Gypsum and focuses on educating students for whom English is a second language. Shafroth is a former executive director of Great Outdoors Colorado and has spent much of his career fighting to protect open space across the state and even here in Eagle County.
The Second Congressional District seat is being vacated by Rep. Mark Udall, a popular Democratic representative who is now running against Republican candidate Bob Shaffer for Colorado’s open senatorial seat. Left-leaning Boulder County dominates the Second Congressional District, so it’s likely the winner of Tuesday’s primary will prevail in November as well.
And that’s all the more reason why Eagle County voters should head to the polls Tuesday.
The primary is open to any Eagle County voter registered as a Democrat. Unaffiliated voters may also vote in this race by registering as a Democrat at the polls on Tuesday. Unaffiliated voters wishing to revert back to an independent status must re-register as unaffiliated with the Eagle County Clerk and Recorder’s Office after the primary.
The last day Republicans could switch their affiliation was July 14.
