VAIL, Colorado — For the past 37 years, Vail Mountain School has been opening doors to homes, providing opportunities for education in the Vail Valley. The school’s annual Home Tour is a traditional fall event, which raises funds for the school’s financial aid program. This year’s tour will take place on Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will feature six homes in Beaver Creek and Bachelor Gulch, a luncheon at SaddleRidge Restaurant, a gourmet bake sale and a raffle. More than 300 Vail Mountain School volunteers (parents, teachers, students and friends of the school) will be on hand at the event to usher approximately 1,000 visitors through the homes.
“It’s wonderful to see everyone at the school pitching in to raise funds for financial aid,” said board member and VMS parent Louise Ingalls. “Without everyone’s support, this event would just not be the same.”
Proceeds from the Home Tour directly benefit Vail Mountain School’s tuition assistance program in the 2008-09 school year; 26 percent of the student body will receive more than $1 million in need-based financial aid.
Guests of the Home Tour are asked to park at the Elk Lot in Avon, where they can purchase tickets at Home Tour Headquarters and hop on a Beaver Creek shuttle for complimentary transportation to the homes and the luncheon. The Bachelor Gulch route begins with a scenic drive up to Daybreak Ridge, where guests will see “Rendezvous Lodge,” an stone and dark timber home reminiscent of a luxurious European ski chalet.
The Tour will then take visitors to a 10,000-square-foot mountain retreat surrounded by mature aspens, followed by a timber and stone home with western views of Castle Peak and Wildridge, both on Elkhorn. Along the Beaver Creek route, visitors are invited to Village Walk for a glimpse into the ski-in/ski-out units, which were completed last year.
From there, guests will be taken to a 10,000-square-foot mountain lodge on Borders Road. Finally, golf enthusiasts will enjoy the warm and elegant residence on the Beaver Creek golf course.
Vail’s fall foliage, at its peak that weekend, will provide the backdrop for the homes. Guests are invited to take a break from the tour for a luncheon at SaddleRidge Restaurant, where Vail Mountain School students will serve the food and provide tours of western relics, including Buffalo Bill’s saddle. Make sure to save time to stock up on prepared appetizers, dinners and desserts at the Gourmet Pantry, located at Home Tour Headquarters.
Guest chef Zak Stone from the French Press and Angelino’s will provide cooking demonstrations throughout the day. Finally, take one last opportunity to purchase a raffle ticket (on sale at the Farmer’s Markets in August), and be eligible to win one of 10 prizes, including a $3,500 shopping spree at Gorsuch Ltd.; a $1,500 18-karat gold, pink pearl, and diamond necklace from A.E. Betteridge; an exclusive Jeep Tour with Lakota Guides; and tickets to a Vilar Center performance plus dinner for two in Beaver Creek, compliments of the Beaver Creek Resort Company and more.
