VAIL — A proposal to turn an empty lot in West Vail into a 240-car parking lot won’t get another shot at approval.
The Town Council on Tuesday told the town staff to withdraw an appeal that could have allowed the project to proceed. The town staff had appealed last week’s decision of the Planning and Environmental Commission to reject the proposal.
“I’m not interested in appealing,” said Councilman Farrow Hitt.
The controversial plan would have put a temporary, 240-car, gravel parking lot on the town-owned Chamonix land, just north of the West Vail Shell gas station. The lot would have existed for one or two years as the town prepared the property to be redeveloped into a fire station and affordable housing, town officials said.
Neighbors objected to the parking plan, saying it would cause traffic, fill up buses and be ugly.
“I think they made the right decision,” said Bob Armour, a West Vail resident. “This was not an appropriate solution.”
The Chamonix temporary lot was a key piece of a stopgap plan that would create 400 temporary parking spaces around Vail next winter to alleviate parking problems that plagued the town last year.
Last winter, cars filled up the town’s municipal parking garages 48 times, forcing cars onto the frontage roads. The town tries to limit that number to 15 days, citing safety concerns.
