CRAIG, Colorado — Battle Mountain golf tied for third out of a field of 20 teams at the Yampa Golf Course on a day when junior Cameron Brown had a bad day. That made Thursday a very good day for Battle Mountain golf.

The Huskies shot a 242, tying them with 5A Grand Junction Central and Fruita Monument. And considering that Brown, normally the team’s ace, had a tough day by his standards — an 81 — the Huskies look to be in good shape as regionals in Aspen loom in less than three weeks.

“Cameron was disappointed with himself,” Huskies coach Cassie Desmone said. “He hit some unfortunate shots. Honestly, he’s hitting the ball so far he’s getting into trouble. Cameron will come down. The kids all like the Aspen course. We’ve won (regular-season) tournaments there. It’s going to be a big confidence booster.”

Dustin Martin was plenty comfortable at Yampa. After a rough start — he teed off on No. 5 — bogeying three of his first four holes, he chipped in for birdie on the 10th. Then he promptly jarred a 30-foot putt for another tweeter on 11, and he was on his way to a 78, which tied him for third place in the medalist competition.

“My chipping has been saving me,” Martin said. “I just haven’t hit my long irons well. I was chipping them all to within two feet on everything.”

“Everything’s coming back together,” Desmone said. “His swing seemed so natural. He was confident. His chipping was amazing, and of course, the better you chip, the better your putting is.”

Diego Gaspar carded an 83, while Geoff Funk fired a 91 and Eric Gaspar had a 94.

Battle Mountain will be sending its younger players to River Valley Ranch Monday, while the contenders for the regional team will play at Aspen on Tuesday in what should be a warm-up for the big show later this month.
