Ande Brill and the Vail Mountain, Colorado, volleyball team have been waiting for their Spirit Week game for about 50 weeks. Just about a year ago, Meeker eliminated the Gore Rangers from the district tournament, and it just happens that those same Cowboys are in town for Saturdays festivities at 1 p.m. at The Garven. Coincidence? We think not. When not plotting revenge, Brill enjoys a good book or is planning to go to China. For more on Brill, read on:
Parents: Peter and Debbie Brill
Sister: Sierra (VMS, eighth grade)
Position: Outside hitter
What is a perfect hit like? You know that Cynthia (Edgerton)s going to set it right. After you hit it, it makes that good contact noise. Sometimes, you get chills."
Good contact noise? It sounds like a whip.
How do you make sure your hands dont hurt? Solid hands are stiff. Theyre a little bit concave. Your palm is sunken in. Its definitely not flat. Its really stiff.
What is the teamwork like? What is important is what we call bettering the ball. It starts with the pass. If the pass is good, there are no issues. But if the pass is a little off, the set is supposed to be better and the kill even better. Thats what we try to keep in mind. The next phase has to be better.
Thoughts on early-season struggles: It was definitely hard in the beginning. I was sick a few times. Lynnie (Somes) had her concussion. Hilarie (Bellis) had a neck injury. We even considered some other lineups. But what it really was not having practices which were up to our potential. If you cant practice to your potential, you cant play to your potential.
Now youre on a roll: Its not arrogance, but its OK, we can win this one. We know what we can do. We know were on a roll. We know what works. Let show them what weve got. Its worked for the last four games.
How excited are you for Meeker? Theres a big history between us and Meeker. They beat us in districts last year and were still a little bit bitter about that. Were all very excited. This is a game weve been talking about since practice started in August.
What is coach Mike Garvey like? I like him a lot. Hes a good guy. Hes really motivational. He talks a lot, but its all good stuff. It puts you in your place without being harsh. He really pushes you to reach your potential. Its great that he can see that and push us.
Goals for the season: I think that this is a team that can make it to state. From the bottom of my heart, I believe that, our team chemistry, and the fitness level weve been at the entire season, its definitely been different from past years.
Funniest teammate: Clare Elich
What is like being a senior? I have a lot of emotions. Im happy and Im excited that Im a role model. Its different when youre a senior. Kids you dont even know come up to you and say hi. Academically, its been really hard with applications and AP classes. It definitely comes at you faster than other years. But its also just fun.
